Protecting your child from sexual abuse at a day care

Day care providers are supposed to provide a safe and caring environment for children. Tragically, many children experience sexual abuse at day care each day across the United States.

Around 25 percent of children in the United States attend some form of day care. The Children’s Bureau of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services found there were almost 650,000 cases of child abuse in the United States in 2016. Over 1,500 of the cases were in day cares, which is more than four cases a day. These cases involved incidents of physical, emotional and sexual abuse.

Like other forms of abuse, sexual abuse can have a devastating effect on children. Because sexual abuse in day care often occurs between infancy and 5 years old, it can affect a severe impact on a child’s development. According to the American Psychological Association, children who experience sexual abuse at a young age have a greater risk of experiencing a drug or alcohol addiction during their lifetime, as well as depression.

Sadly, many children who experience sexual abuse are afraid to speak up. Child advocates suggest parents should watch out for the following signs of sexual abuse:

  • Changes in mood
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Curiosity about sex
  • Wetting the bed
  • Nightmares
  • Acting clingy or attached
  • Fear of going to day care
  • Itching or bruising around genitals

Sexual abuse cases can be devastating and take an emotional toll on a family. If you believe your child is a victim of sexual abuse, consult with a trusted legal professional to assist you during this difficult time.
